8 Facts You don’t know about London Eye

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel, its official name was originally published as the British Airways London Eye, then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye, then the EDF Energy London Eye. Since mid-January 2015, it has been known in branding as the Coca-Cola London Eye, following an agreement signed in September 2014.

• The London Eye offers the best views over the city. As I said before, it is 135 meters tall, which allows its passengers to admire the city about 25 miles away. On a clear day, you can make out Windsor Castle. It is one of the highest viewing platforms in London
• Every year, around three and a half million people, including tourists and London residents, go on the London Eye. It means the London Eye receives more visitors than the Great Pyramids of Giza or the Taj Mahal in India. It takes 30 minutes to complete a revolution and doesn’t have to stop for passengers to step on and off. And it carries almost 800 passengers on one revolution.

• The London Eye has 32 capsules around its wheel, one for each borough of London. A capsule weighs 10 tons, which means the entire wheel weights 320 tons. Each capsule can carry 25 passengers, and the most interesting part about each capsule is that you can walk around in the capsule; they are that big. The capsules have air-condition, and comfortable sits which makes the one revolution very comfortable.
• The 32 capsules of the London Eye are actually numbered from 1 to 33. Interesting, no? I also didn’t understand how is it possible then after a few attempts of research i got to know that the number 13 is left out, for the good luck of the observation wheel.

• The London Eye took 7 years to construct and was designed by a number of architects including, Mark Sparrowhawk, David Marks and Julia Barfield.
• It has already become an iconic London building. It provides a focal point for London’s New Year’s firework display and was light up in the colors of the Union Jack to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
  
• From 2000 to 2012, the London Eye won more than 30 awards, for the best ride, best attraction, experience, design, and many more.
• The London Eye is not the first big wheel to be located in London. The Great Wheel was constructed in 1895 for the Empire of India Exhibition. It was demolished in 1907 having being used by over 2 million people.
